Madison, MS F4: November 24, 2001

While perusing the NWS Jackson's Weather Events page I came across the unforgettable F4 which hit Madison right around Thanksgiving shortly after 5AM just over 10 years ago. I was thrilled to see they had posted some radar images from that day and I wanted to share those here. They also have a few damage photos as well...

This is standard base reflectivity. Awfully close to the radar site! I was at home when this happened which is really close to the city dot for Ridgeland, so you can imagine this was a little too close for comfort for me. This storm has a classic supercell structure with a very pronounced hook echo. Baseball sized hail was also reported in northern Hinds County with this storm.

This is the standard base velocity product which breaks down the wind profile. Green colors are winds blowing towards the radar and red are blowing away. This image is a few scans after the reflectivity image above. Still, there is a clear indication of a strong tornado. At this point-based on this map- this tornado would have already been through Fairfield and crossed HWY 463 and is just about to cross I-55. The tornado lifted a short time later, just before 6AM.
